To obtain acceptable focus
of your subject (especially close-ups),
focus on the eye nearest you.
Depth of field is greater in back of your
point of focus (away from you), than it is in front of your point
of focus (toward you).
In addition, details closest to the viewer are
more noticeable and are "expected" to be in
focus, while details further away from
the viewer are less scrutinized.
